Fall League 2009

Dear JYBSA Families,

The regular season has ended, which means it's time for JYBSA's fall league to get going! This year we're running the fall league for two age groups: 9-11 and 12-13. The leagues will be games-only, with Sunday games on August 23 and 30 and September 13, 20, and 27. The Championship Game will be October 4.

Any player who played on a team for JYBSA in the regular season is eligible for the fall league. Unfortunately, we cannot allow players into the fall league who did not play in the regular season because our insurance only covers players who participated in the regular season.

Entry forms for the fall league are attached to this email message. (The form is also copied below). All entry forms must be returned by no later than Monday, August 9. Please mail your entry form along with entry fees to:

Dear JYBSA Families,Here’s the latest update on the Sports Complex project! First, we want to make two very important clarifications: JYBSA will recognize EVERY donation permanently on the “Walls of Fame” at the new complex, and EVERY pledge can be spread out over time and pad by different methods (cash, check, credit card, stock donations, etc.), allowing you to pay the way you want and at the pace you can afford. We need donations to make this project a reality. If you have already donated, thank you!!! If you have not yet made a pledge, please consider giving what you can and asking your family and friends to do the same, knowing that every donation will help JYBSA make a difference for Janesville kids.

Next, ESPN (yes, ESPN!) ran a story on our project on its “Outside the Lines” program yesterday. Great job, Dave Ellis! If you didn’t see the story, you can check it out at: http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=4290079&categoryid=3286128.

Next, the construction continues! The City’s work is nearly finished: all the fields are graded, the grass is growing, and it’s starting to look like a ballpark! Our work comes next. The irrigation system is being installed – that work should be done in a month or so. After that, our priorities are to pay for the fencing, dugouts, scoreboards, concession stands, and lighting (in that order). We’ve raised 25% of what we need to pay for those things, but we need donations to raise the remaining 25%. Please spread the word! (If you have a Facebook account, look for our group called “Friends of Janesville Youth Baseball & Softball Association” and invite all your Facebook Friends to join, too). The Sports Complex project is going to serve Janesville for the next 100 years. With everyone working together and donating what they can, we are going to make the project a reality.

Fall League will be open to any player who participated in the Janesville Youth Baseball 9 – 12 year old program in 2007.

Cost is $40 per player

6 game schedule, August 19, 26, Sep 10, 16, 23, and 30. Games will be played at 12:30 or 2:30

SUNDAYS ONLY – NO PRACTICES – ONLY GAMES

Players will receive a cap, jersey and socks

Sign up day will be July 22nd from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. or you may sign up anytime at either the East or West Concession Stand beginning July 16th. League intention is to have 4 teams with a maximum of 80 players.

Former Board Member Left Legacy With Janesville Youth Baseball

Mention the name Don Peerenboom to anyone who knew him, and watch as a smile lights up their face. Then watch their eyes light up, and listen to the stories they have to tell. Kids and adults alike can’t help but remember Don’s gentle demeanor and positive attitude. Friends and acquaintances might recount his lasting loyalty and dedication to each and every project he was involved in. And perhaps nowhere will you find better examples of these fond memories than at the place where Don gave so much of his time; Janesville Youth Baseball Park.

For years, Don Peerenboom served on the Board of Directors for Janesville Youth Baseball. He was involved in numerous projects and filled many roles over that period. For much of that time, Don was in charge of the program’s annual candy sale. According to Steve Ellis, another long-time board member and a close friend of Don’s, it was because of Don Peerenboom’s personality that the candy sale was such a successful fundraiser. “Don had a special relationship with our vendor,” Ellis said. “Because of him, each year’s sale was a success.”

Kathi Braun, another devoted board member who worked with Don on the candy sale, remembers his dedication and caring more than anything else. “Don was a person who was just very dedicated to the program and who was always looking to do the best thing possible for the kids and for Janesville Youth Baseball,” she said. “He always thought things through and his decisions were always based on what was best for kids and for the program. I always admired that about Don.”

Like many volunteers, Don had a vested interest in Janesville Youth Baseball; his sons, Matt, Curt and Tim, were all standouts in the program. But Don didn’t fade into the sunset when his three sons outgrew their little league uniforms. Instead, he stayed involved and played an integral role in the program’s continued success.

“The last few years, Don was our Safety Director,” said Ellis. “As usual he went above and beyond by developing a manual and a program so that each year we received a discount on our insurance policy.” As a result of his longevity with the program, Don served as one of a few “old-school” board members and his opinions always held certain esteem with the rest of the board.

“Don, like myself, stayed dedicated to Janesville Youth Baseball long after his boys left the program,” commented Ellis. “He and I often shared old-school views when it came to making decisions involving the program. I will always remember Don as having a calming effect when things would get heated,” he added. “He was always able to sit back and sort through all of the opinions and be a voice of reason for the rest of us.”

Paul Aurit, an honorary board member who also considered Don a close friend, echoed Ellis’s sentiments. “Don was one of the most even-keeled and level-headed individuals I’ve ever known,” Aurit said. “Every decision he made was based on the well-being of the kids and Janesville Youth Baseball. Don saw the best in everything.”

Maybe it was Don’s dedication to Janesville Youth Baseball, or his ability to offer reason into a heated discussion. Or maybe it was his trademark mustache, or the smile that seemed to have a permanent home underneath it. Whatever it was, Don Peerenboom left a lasting legacy with everyone who had the good fortune of knowing him. Without a doubt, Janesville Youth Baseball is a better program because of Don Peerenboom. It is safe to say that the entire community is a better place because of him too.

On Sunday, August 27, Janesville Youth Baseball will host the 1st annual Don Peerenboom Fun Run & Walk to memorialize Don Peerenboom for his years of service to the program and the community. Details about the run and sponsorship opportunities can be found on Janesville Youth Baseball’s home page.

Janesville Youth Baseball consists of the following leagues:

Dress for the weather: Bats and helmets will be provided. Each player will be asked to hit off a pitching machine, field ground balls, and fly balls, and be timed in running. Managers from each team will be evaluating each player. It is important to listen carefully to the instructions, as well as HUSTLE at all times. Try to relax and don’t worry about missing a pitch or a ball. Players should receive a call on Monday or Tuesday night as to which team they are on. All Players who go through evaluations will make a team.

Dear Parents,
As part of your family’s involvement in the Janesville Youth Baseball program, your child is required to sell a minimum of 2 boxes of candy (ages 9-12) or 10 Win-Win cards (ages 13-15). These two traditional sales are very important for the continuation of Janesville Youth Baseball. Every year they are, by far, our largest fund raisers.

NEW THIS YEAR! You have the option of a “Buy Out”. For the “Buy Out” option, you can pay $75.00 instead of receiving the 2 boxes of candy or the 10 Win-Win cards to sell.

Along with your child’s player fee, the $75.00 for the “buy out” must be paid either:
1 - When returning your child's registration application by March 10 in the mail, or
2 - When signing up your child at the Sign-Up Night on March 15.
If you chose to not use the “buy out” option, that’s fine. In June, your child will then be required to sell his or her candy or Win-Win cards.

The “Buy Out” option MUST be paid by no later than March 15, 2006!

Two Options in 2006 for Signing Up for Janesville Youth Baseball

Beginning this year, you can now sign up your child for Janesville Youth Baseball one of two ways:

1 – You can sign up at the Sign Up Night at the Craig High School
cafeteria on Thursday, March 16, or

2 – You can mail in your completed application along with your player
fees. This must be received by Friday, March 10. (click here to download application)

If you chose the 2nd option, your child’s player fee MUST accompany the application. Please also see the page regarding the new Candy & Win-Win Card Sale “buy out” option.

If you chose to use the mail in option for signing up:

1 – Make your check payable to Janesville Youth Baseball or JYB.

Age determination explained & league format 2006

Last May, the Little League International Board of Directors, governing body for the worlds largest organized youth sports program, accepted a recommendation from USA Baseball to change the league age determination date for it’s players starting in the 2006 season.

USA Baseball represents amateur baseball in the U.S. as a member of the United States Olympic Committee {USOC] and the International Baseball Association Federation [IBAF]. Virtually every major national youth baseball organization in the U.S., including Little League and Babe Ruth are U.S.A. Baseball National Members. USA Baseball recommended that the league age determination date be changed from July 31 to April 30, for the 2006 season for all youth baseball organizations.

The league age determination date is the age a player has attained as of a specific date, for the purpose of placing the player in a particular division. The old date in the baseball divisions of Little League was July 31.

Starting with the 2006 season, the date in all divisions of Little League and Babe Ruth will be April 30 of the current year/ Season.

For example, under the old regulations a player who turns 13 years old in May, June, or July of 2006 would have been considered league age 13 for the entire 2006 season, despite the fact that said player would have played most if not all the season without having actually reached his or her 13th birthday. Under the new regulation, such a player will have a league age of 12 throughout the 2006 season.

Also Little League has approved a change that provides an option for 12 year olds to “ play up “ in the Prep League. 12 year olds, born in 1993,with May, June or July birthdays, have the option of staying in little league as a 12-year-old, or going to the Prep league to play as a 13-year-old. If they decide to play in the Prep league they would be required to repeat Prep League the 2007 season as well. Those electing to repeat their 12 year old season in Little League for the 2006 season will move forward to the Prep League in the 2007 season as has always been.

This year Janesville Youth Baseball is offering the option of signing up for 2006 season via downloading an application from our Web Site http://www.janesvilleyouthbaseball.com/ and mailing it to us Vs coming to our sign-up night in person. To summerize: All players who played Janesville Youth Baseball last year that have a Birthday in May, June, or July, will play this year at the same age as last year except last year 12 year olds born in May , June, or July of 1993 who will have the option of either playing Little League as a 12 year old again or playing Prep league as a 13 year old. This rule was made because of the big transition from little league size diamond to the much larger Babe Ruth diamond. Those 12-year-olds choosing to play Little league this year will move to Prep in the 2007 season. Those 12-year-olds choosing Prep this year will be required to repeat Prep league as a 13-year-old for the 2007 season.

Also new this season will be an option to try-out for a 15 year old traveling team. We will be sponsoring 2 15-year-old teams that will play about 14 games in the Dane County League. Half of these games will be played in Janesville. The league play will be twice a week on the same two nights of the week, which could be Mondays and Thursdays. These two teams would also play each other once a week in Janesville to fill our obligation of league play to qualify for tournament play. Because of these two teams making up about 2/3 of the eligible 15-year-olds, all 14 year olds, and any 15-year-olds not on one of the High School Teams this sping will be required to try-out on April 1st, 2006. We will be forming all new teams this year.

A field of weeds is blossoming into a field of dreams come true on Janesville's east side.Phil McQuade Field, named in memory of a former Craig High School athlete who loved baseball, is located in the Janesville Sports Complex on Wuthering Hills Drive. It will officially open when the Blue Jays face the Brewers in a Babe Ruth League game at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.There will be little pomp and circumstance before an umpire hollers "batter up,'' but Janesville Youth Baseball president Dave Ellis, his brother Steve, and Steve's son, Andy, will be thinking about the project's ups and downs and the rewards of a job well done but still unfinished.

Dave Ellis, in his second year as Youth Baseball president, has coached in the organization for more than 12 years.Steve Ellis has been involved with youth baseball since the 1970s and was the organization's president for 12 years. Andy, 25, a 1998 Parker High graduate, has worked summers for the baseball organization since he was 15.It took more than three years of fund raising, planning and building to make McQuade Field a reality.The work culminated a project that was a dream of McQuade's longtime friend, Mark Groshan.Dave Ellis said working on the project and turning a wild field into a baseball diamond was a one-of-kind experience."What better experience is there than to dig in the dirt and build a baseball field from the ground up?'' Dave asked. "I wish we could have had aerial pictures to show how the field was changed as the work progressed.''Steve said he thought, at times, they had taken on more they could handle. But the project has been rewarding."I enjoyed it a lot,'' Steve said. "There is a lot of satisfaction in working so kids can get to play baseball.''The Ellis family dug the infield, dug fence-post holes and installed the fence, among other tasks. The work went a day at time for more than a year."We rented a Bobcat with a post-hole digger and popped 200 holes in a day, 4-feet deep and 10-inches around,'' Dave said. "It took eight hours.''After the poles were set in concrete, it was time to stretch the fence.The week of this past Christmas, Dave, Andy and Steve were stretching fence properly, thanks to Jim Betz."Jim works at Farm & Fleet and put up fencing for years,'' Dave said. "He lives on Hearthridge (near the complex), and was driving by and stopped and talked and spent the first day showing us how to do it.''There also was the making of the backstop, sighting and measuring the baselines and building the pitcher's mound.When play begins Wednesday, Andy will pay close attention to the mound."I'm going to look at the mound,'' he said. "They put me in charge of the mound, and I got to draw the circle. I can't believe that it was just a field of grass.''Andy, a teacher at Oaklawn Academy near Edgerton, is looking to the future when Janesville's boys and girls can enjoy the fruits of all the volunteers' labors."It is something for Dave and my dad to maybe see their grandkids play on the field,'' Andy said. "I know I'll never forget going out there for the first time and seeing a field of weeds.''As for that infield, Andy searched the Internet for a good recipe, and G.R. Lyons of Lycon Inc. delivered enough clay, sand and dirt to do the job. The infield is a mixture of 40 percent clay, 40 percent sand and 20 percent dirt.McQuade Field isn't finished, however. Bleachers, a scoreboard and benches for the dugouts are on order. Next month, when all hardware is in place, there will be an official dedication ceremony.Then there are the lights. They are not cheap."We have to wait until we pay the bills,'' Steve said. "We raised in the neighborhood of $75,000, and the majority of it was used to build the field. Lights cost more than $100,000 for one diamond.''While the Ellis clan has done the yeoman's share of the planning and labor, Steve was quick to note that volunteers would drop by without an invitation."We were fortunate to have a lot of people help,'' Steve said. "People would drive by, stop and then go home and change clothes and come back and ask, 'What can I do?'"Besides the Ellis family, help came from Janesville Brick and Tile, McGrath Electrical, Prairie Craftsmen, CB&K Supply, J.P. Cullen & Sons, Bill Hughes and Janesville Plumbing.They all pitched in to help build a dream in the name of a young man who left us too soon.
